Summary
In this moving tale of two friends, secretly harbouring feelings for one another, a decade of missed opportunities underpins everything.
In the winter of 1999 Camilla leaves home to study in Venice. Her house is semi-derelict and in a corner of Venice unpopulated by tourists. On her way to the island on the ferry, she’s spotted by a would-be-Romeo, Silvestro. She brushes him off, but Silvestro refuses to take no for an answer, following her home and managing to insinuate himself as her guest for the night. He fails though, in his efforts to seduce her.
Over the next ten years, Camilla and Silvestro form a strong bond and keep finding their way back to each other. The narrative captures beautifully the push and pull between them. Romantic, wistful and possessing a restrained intelligence, this is an involving romantic drama which highlight that in life, as in anything, timing is everything
